Devy Deep Dive - Player of the Week

The college football season is officially underway, and while we’re diving into Week 1, it’s important to look back at the early standouts who set the tone in Week 0. Each week, I’ll spotlight one player whose performance deserves extra attention and break down what it means for their devy value, draft stock, and long-term outlook. To kick things off, I want to highlight a player who made an early statement in Week 0 and could be carving out a bigger role in both college football and our devy conversations.

Player Introduction & Context

Rocco Becht, a redshirt junior quarterback for Iowa State, has officially entered his second year as the Cyclones’ starter—and he wasted no time reminding everyone why he’s one of the more exciting signal-callers in college football. At 6’1”, he doesn’t fit the prototypical NFL mold, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for with toughness, athleticism, and a natural command of the position.

In Week 0, under the bright lights of Dublin, Becht delivered a clutch performance that set the tone for Iowa State’s season and put him firmly in the national spotlight. Facing off against No. 17 Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, Becht led the Cyclones to a hard-fought 24–21 victory over a top-25 opponent. He finished 14-of-28 for 183 yards and two touchdowns through the air, added a 7-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter, and most importantly—kept the football out of harm’s way with zero interceptions.

It wasn’t just the stat line that stood out, though. Becht showed growth and maturity in high-pressure moments, delivering strikes to Dominic Overby and Brett Eskildsen when the Cyclones needed momentum, and later sealing the win with a gutsy fourth-down conversion to Carson Hansen. His defining moment came late in the fourth quarter, when he tucked the ball and willed himself into the end zone for a game-changing touchdown.

A season ago, Becht set the Iowa State single-season passing record with 3,505 yards and 25 touchdowns. Now, he looks ready to stack wins on top of production, and if Week 0 was any indication, the Cyclones are going to be right in the mix for the Big 12 title race..
