Devy Diamonds: Three-Star Freshmen Flying Under the Radar
We highlight underrated three-star freshmen at each position who could make an early impact and rise quickly on the college football and devy radar.
Every year, college football fans and devy managers get caught up in the buzz surrounding five-star phenoms and blue-chip recruits. But buried beneath the surface, there's a different type of story brewing: one built on hunger, overlooked talent, and opportunity.
Three-star freshmen often arrive with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. While they might not carry the hype of a top-100 recruit, plenty of future stars including NFL standouts, once held the same modest ranking.
In this article, we’re highlighting three-star freshmen to watch by position in the 2025 season. Whether it’s a running back in line for early carries, a wide receiver turning heads in spring camp, or a quarterback waiting in the wings, these are the prospects who could become household names sooner than later.
If you play in devy or C2C formats, these are the players to stash before the breakout. If you’re just a fan of the underdog, this is your cheat sheet to the next great story.
Quarterback (QB)
Quarterback is easily the most difficult position to project in an article like this. Most three-star quarterbacks are developmental prospects, often buried on depth charts behind blue-chip recruits or upperclassmen. The path to early playing time is narrow, and breakout seasons are rare. Still, every year a few surprise us, either through raw talent, opportunity, or a combination of both. In this piece, we highlight two three-star quarterbacks who put impressive traits on tape and have the potential to outperform their ranking and maybe even climb the devy radar sooner than expected.
David McComb, QB, Kansas (6'4", 220 lbs)
McComb might not carry a flashy star rating, but this kid can go. The Kansas staff has been all over him throughout the process, and it’s easy to see why when you flip on the tape. He’s a legit athlete at 6’4”, 220, with verified testing numbers in the 4.7s in the 40 and sub-4.4 shuttle times. That athleticism shows up in-game too. He’s dangerous on designed runs and creates well outside the pocket. As a senior at Edmond Memorial, he completed over 66% of his passes for 2,000+ yards and chipped in 764 yards on the ground at over 8 yards per carry. The ball pops out of his hand with real zip, especially on the move.
He’s stepping into a well-run system under Lance Leipold, and while he won’t be asked to play right away, the long-term upside is there. KU has done a great job developing quarterbacks, and McComb fits what they want to do. He’s raw in spots, but the tools are there; strong frame, mobility, live arm, and a natural feel when the play breaks down. He’s definitely one to monitor after this season.
Carson Boyd, QB, Illinois (6'0", 185 lbs)
