Who is Preston Stone?
Stone was a four-star in the composites and attended Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas. Stone was a four-year starter and played 48 games, compiling 902 completions on 1,376 attempts for 13,178 yards with 148 touchdowns to 21 interceptions. Stone also was a presence on the ground, accumulating 2,172 rushing yards in those four years and an additional 34 touchdowns. Stone’s most efficient season as a passer was as a senior, where he completed 74.4% of his passes for 3,448 passing yards and 38 touchdowns to six interceptions, adding 536 yards on the ground and ten rushing touchdowns. As a runner, Stone’s most prolific season came as a Junior when he ran for 876 yards and added 11 touchdowns. Stone was part of the 2021 class and held 47 offers. The final schools for Stone were Texas, LSU, and SMU, with SMU being favored to land the Dallas product. Stone decided to stay in his home city and be part of the landscape-changing class at SMU.
Before Stone’s arrival, SMU was getting two and three-star athletes; once he arrived, they were able to get four-star tight end RJ Maryland, and high-profile transfer athletes in their respective classes would come in, such as four-star running back Camar Wheaton and five-star wide receiver Jordan Hudson. SMU has a commitment from five-star quarterback Keelan Russell to follow in Stone’s footsteps. Stone changed how SMU is viewed and paved the way for them to move up to the Power Four, which is now in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Stone saw limited action as a freshman in 2021 and in 2022. Stone was named the starter for the 2023 season, where he threw for 3,192 yards and 28 touchdowns before his season ended due to a broken left fibula. Stone has been cleared for all activities and will be fully involved in fall camp. and is the unquestioned starter for SMU.
