NFL News Recap: Dynasty Fallout
Kevin recaps this week of news to find any dynasty fallout.
We’re still a few days from the start of NFL free agency, but the league never truly slows down. Over the past several days we’ve already seen a handful of notable developments: roster decisions and rumors beginning to swirl as teams position themselves for the offseason.
This period of the calendar can be deceptive. While the biggest contracts and signings haven’t officially happened yet, the groundwork is already being laid across the league. Front offices are making decisions about veteran contracts, depth charts are quietly shifting, and teams are beginning to reveal their offseason priorities.
For dynasty managers, this is one of the most important windows of the year. Small pieces of news now can signal larger changes that impact player value, opportunity, and long-term outlooks. Sometimes, the most actionable dynasty moves come before free agency even begins.
So with that in mind, let’s dive into the latest NFL headlines, and more importantly, what they mean for dynasty teams moving forward.
Kyler Murray Nearing Free Agency
It appears increasingly likely that Kyler Murray will be on the open market within the next week. The only scenario where that doesn’t happen would be a last-minute trade, but Murray’s contract makes that outcome unlikely. Most teams understand the situation: he’s expected to be released, which will allow them to sign him without taking on his full contract.
Murray’s case is somewhat unique. Despite being cut, he still has $36.8 million in guaranteed money remaining, and the contract includes offset language. That means any new contract he signs will simply reduce what the Arizona Cardinals owe him. As a result, Murray will likely sign a veterans minimum deal (around $1.3 million) with his next team while Arizona covers the remaining $35.5 million. Financially, that makes him one of the most attractive quarterback options available this offseason.
Several teams have already surfaced as potential landing spots.
The Atlanta Falcons are an obvious candidate. Atlanta still has uncertainty at quarterback with Michael Penix Jr. recovering from a torn ACL. While his rehab is reportedly progressing well, the timeline could run anywhere from nine to twelve months. If Penix isn’t fully ready for Week 1, Murray could provide both insurance and starting capability. That said, bringing in a quarterback of Murray’s caliber could send a complicated message about Atlanta’s long-term commitment to Penix.
The Cleveland Browns are also exploring quarterback options and may be looking for value. Given Murray’s expected minimum contract, he fits that description. However, Murray is likely seeking a clear starting opportunity to rebuild his career, which could push him toward teams with a more defined role available.
The Miami Dolphins represent an interesting possibility for financial reasons. Miami is navigating a difficult salary-cap situation tied largely to Tua Tagovailoa’s contract, and a minimum-salary veteran quarterback could allow them to stabilize the position without adding additional financial strain. It could also be a short-term solution if Miami ultimately plans to reset at quarterback in the 2027 draft.
The Minnesota Vikings have also been connected to Murray. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has a strong track record working with veteran quarterbacks, and pairing Murray with Justin Jefferson would immediately create one of the more exciting offensive combinations in the league. The complication, however, is J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota still views the young quarterback as part of its future, and signing Murray would almost certainly place him ahead of McCarthy in the short term.
The New York Jets are another team expected to explore the possibility. With Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall already in place, the Jets’ offensive supporting cast is solid, and Murray’s mobility would fit well with what the coaching staff has historically preferred.
The reality of the NFL is that there is a need for quarterbacks and that won’t change especially with the 2026 quarterback class being lackluster. You cant just rule out Murray being a premier free agent at the position even if his tenure in Arizona ended so poorly.
Dynasty Impact
From a dynasty perspective, Murray’s situation is fairly straightforward: if he lands a starting job, his value will rise immediately. Currently sitting around QB27 on KeepTradeCut, Murray represents one of the clearer buy opportunities in dynasty leagues. If he’s on the field as a starter, his fantasy profile still carries top-12 upside at the position thanks to his mobility and playmaking ability.
He may not be a perfect NFL quarterback, but fantasy managers know the difference between real-life evaluation and fantasy production. Murray has consistently demonstrated the ability to produce at a high level when healthy, and that alone keeps his ceiling intact. If a league mate is selling at his current price, he’s a clear buy.
Another factor here is market timing. With Murray potentially landing a starting role soon, his value could spike quickly. That’s why this is the window to make a move. Once a team announces him as the presumed starter, the buying opportunity likely disappears.
It’s also worth noting that Murray’s presence could temporarily stall the market for Malik Willis and other fringe quarterback assets. Teams waiting to see where Murray lands may delay decisions on secondary options. For dynasty managers, the takeaway is simple: this is the time to buy Murray before the market adjusts.

DJ Moore Traded to Buffalo: Dynasty Fallout
The Chicago Bears have agreed to trade wide receiver DJ Moore and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick. The deal will become official at the start of the new league year and represents a notable shift for both offenses heading into the 2026 season.
Moore, who turns 29 next month, is coming off a down season statistically with 50 receptions for 682 yards and six touchdowns on 85 targets. Despite the Bears’ offensive improvements under Ben Johnson, Moore saw the lowest reception and yardage totals of his career. Chicago was also motivated financially, as Moore is due $23.485 million in guaranteed salary for 2026.
For Buffalo, the move is about stabilizing the receiving corps around Josh Allen. The Bills struggled with consistent receiver production last season, with Khalil Shakir being the only player on the roster to eclipse 40 receptions.
Moore immediately becomes the most proven wide receiver on the roster and should step into a high-volume role under head coach Joe Brady. The reunion between Moore and Brady is notable as well. Brady served as Moore’s offensive coordinator in Carolina during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, when Moore averaged at least 13.9 PPR points per game despite inconsistent quarterback play.
For Chicago, the bigger dynasty story is what Moore’s departure means for the younger pass catchers. The Bears have already seen flashes from Luther Burden III, who showed elite playmaking ability late in his rookie season. His breakout performance against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 highlighted the type of explosive element he brings to Ben Johnson’s system. Meanwhile, Rome Odunze also showed strong early-season production before a foot injury disrupted the back half of his year. With Moore now out of the picture, both receivers should see an increase in routes and opportunities within the offense.
The player who may benefit the most, however, is tight end Colston Loveland. Loveland closed his rookie season on a massive heater, posting multiple games with double-digit targets and strong fantasy production down the stretch. His role as a middle-of-the-field weapon in Johnson’s offense appears secure, and the vacated opportunities from Moore should only reinforce that usage.
Dynasty Impact
From a dynasty perspective, Moore likely still has value, but expectations should remain realistic. Playing with Josh Allen gives him a chance to produce another solid WR2 season, and the reunion with Joe Brady helps stabilize his outlook. However, Moore is unlikely to be the type of league-winning asset dynasty managers chase at this stage of his career.
If a league mate believes the move to Buffalo could push Moore back into WR1 territory, this could be a strong sell window. One interesting trade you could make is moving Moore for a player like Travis Hunter. I know I have talked about Hunter being a sell, but thats the type of fun lottery bet I would make on retooling or rebuilding dynasty roster.

The real dynasty winners here are in Chicago. Both Burden and Loveland receive a meaningful boost in opportunity with Moore gone, and they now project as core pieces of the Bears’ passing attack moving forward. Loveland in particular, looks poised to become one of the focal points of the offense, while Burden’s explosive skill set fits perfectly in Ben Johnson’s system.
Odunze also benefits from the move, but if dynasty managers are choosing where to prioritize assets in Chicago, Burden and Loveland stand out as the most attractive long-term investments. Moving off Odunze to pivot into one of those two players, depending on market value, is a move I’d be comfortable making in many leagues.

David Montgomery Traded to Houston: Dynasty Fallout
The Detroit Lions have traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, a 2027 seventh-round pick, and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs. The move reshapes both backfields heading into the 2026 season and has immediate dynasty implications.
Montgomery thrived during his first two seasons in Detroit while sharing the backfield with Jahmyr Gibbs, scoring 25 rushing touchdowns across that span. However, his role began to shrink in Year 3, especially late in the season, as Gibbs continued to assert himself as the more explosive playmaker in the offense.
From Detroit’s perspective, this move is about fully unleashing Gibbs. Even while operating in a timeshare, Gibbs finished as a top-three PPR running back in each of the last two seasons. With Montgomery now out of the picture, Gibbs projects to see a significant increase in volume, both in the run game and in the passing game.
Whenever Montgomery missed time over the past two seasons, Gibbs produced elite fantasy numbers. In games where he handled a larger workload, Gibbs routinely delivered RB1 overall-type production. The combination of explosive efficiency, receiving ability, and now increased touch potential makes him one of the most valuable assets in fantasy football entering 2026.
The Lions could still bring in another running back to complement Gibbs, but it would likely be in more of a depth role. Gibbs’ talent and role in the offense should allow him to maintain elite fantasy value regardless.
For Montgomery, the trade offers something he wasn’t going to get in Detroit anymore: a chance to lead a backfield. Houston’s running game struggled last season, especially after injuries to Joe Mixon forced the Texans to cycle through multiple backs. Rookie Woody Marks flashed at times but never fully seized the role, finishing the season with modest production and limited receiving involvement.
Montgomery should step into Houston as the primary early-down runner and goal-line option. At 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds, he brings the physical running style that the Texans lacked last season and has consistently been one of the league’s more reliable touchdown producers. While Houston’s offensive environment isn’t as explosive as Detroit’s, the increased opportunity could push Montgomery back into the 200-touch range.
Dynasty Impact
This is one of those rare moves that benefits both assets from a dynasty perspective. Gibbs now has a clear path to a full lead-back workload in Detroit, which puts the RB1 overall outcome squarely in play in PPR formats. His receiving ability and big-play explosiveness already made him elite, more volume only raises that ceiling.
Montgomery also gains value with the move. While he’s approaching 29 and may not be the most efficient runner anymore, the expected workload in Houston should keep him fantasy relevant. If he handles the bulk of the early-down and goal-line work, he profiles as a solid RB2 option who can still deliver usable weekly production.
In short, Detroit gets to fully lean into Gibbs’ star potential, while Montgomery gets one more opportunity to lead a backfield, making this a win-win outcome for dynasty managers holding either player. I also think Marks is an asset worth holding. He’s a solid RB on a depth chart and will stay on a roster. If anything were to happen to Montgomery, Marks would slide in and be just fine.

Tyler Higbee Re-Signs with Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are bringing back Tyler Higbee on a two-year deal that keeps him under contract through the 2027 season. Higbee has long been one of the culture-setters in the locker room and remains a trusted option for Matthew Stafford.
The more interesting angle here is how this affects the tight end room with Jake Ferguson now in the picture. The Rams leaned heavily on 13 personnel last season, deploying three tight ends on the field at once, and that approach gave Stafford one of the most consistent stretches of play in recent years.
Dynasty Takeaway
This move actually opens a buy window on Ferguson. Higbee’s presence allows the Rams to use him more as the blocking and in-line tight end, which frees Ferguson up to operate as a stand-up receiver and move piece in the offense. That’s where Ferguson’s traits shine, he’s a mismatch player who can create problems for linebackers and safeties. The Rams clearly trust him and appear willing to get creative with how they deploy their tight ends. If the offense continues leaning into those heavy personnel packages, Ferguson could quietly become a featured weapon.
Patriots Plan to Release Stefon Diggs
The New England Patriots have informed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs that he will be released at the start of the 2026 league year. Diggs was productive during his lone season in New England, posting 85 receptions for 1,013 yards while serving as the team’s top receiver and emotional leader. He also contributed during the Patriots’ postseason run to Super Bowl LX. However, Diggs is now 32 years old, and his off-field legal situation clouds his future significantly.
Dynasty Takeaway
At this point, Diggs is close to a dead dynasty asset. Even if he lands with another team, his age and uncertainty surrounding his availability make it extremely difficult to project meaningful long-term value. Most dynasty managers will struggle to move him for anything substantial. For New England, this likely signals that the Patriots will look toward the draft to replace him.
The player who could see a short-term bump is Kayshon Boutte. Boutte could see an increase in targets if the Patriots don’t immediately add another veteran receiver, though any boost should be viewed as modest until the team addresses the position more aggressively.
