Week 0 gave us our first real taste of college football, and with it came plenty of performances that demanded our attention. Some players immediately lived up to the offseason hype, while others seemingly came out of nowhere and produced eye-catching numbers. However, one game never tells the entire story. Was the breakout supported by legitimate usage and talent, or was it simply the product of a favorable matchup and an unusual game script? In this Week 0 edition of Smoke or No Smoke, we’ll examine the biggest player performances from the opening slate and determine which ones are worth buying into and which ones could disappear as quickly as they arrived.
Trent Mosley, WR, USC
Week 0: 7 receptions, 118 yards, 1 touchdown
Verdict: Smoke
Trent Mosley entered USC as a decorated four-star prospect, but nobody expected the true freshman to become the centerpiece of Lincoln Riley’s passing attack this quickly. Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown in USC’s 42-26 win over San Jose State, becoming the first Power Four freshman since Rondale Moore in 2018 to record at least seven receptions, 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut.
The box score was impressive, but his usage makes the performance even more encouraging. Mosley led USC with nine targets, accounted for six first downs and finished with more than twice as many receiving yards as any other Trojan. He operated primarily from the slot, lining up there on 77.3% of his snaps, and averaged an outstanding 5.36 yards per route run. Mosley also produced 7.4 yards after the catch per reception, showing the versatility and explosiveness that made him one of California’s most productive high school players.
This was not simply one broken coverage inflating his final numbers. Mosley consistently created offense, recording receptions of 16, 20, 17 and 33 yards during the second quarter before adding a 14-yard touchdown in the third. USC also trusted him on special teams, where he generated a 41-yard punt return in his first collegiate game.
There is some context we cannot ignore. Tanook Hines and Terrell Anderson were both unavailable, opening additional opportunities within USC’s receiving rotation. The Trojans also faced San Jose State, so Mosley will encounter much more difficult defenses as the season progresses. His weekly target volume could decline once the receiver room gets healthier.
Still, there is too much smoke here to dismiss what we saw. Mosley graduated early, arrived during the spring and immediately earned the trust of Jayden Maiava and Lincoln Riley. That connection was obvious in Week 0, as Maiava looked in Mosley’s direction more than any other USC receiver. His combination of alignment versatility, yards-after-catch ability and special-teams value should make it difficult for the coaching staff to reduce his role.
Fantasy Impact: Mosley should be one of the biggest early-season risers in Campus to Canton formats and a priority addition wherever he remains available in CFF leagues. From a Devy perspective, we should avoid vaulting him into the elite tier after one game, but a true freshman commanding this type of involvement in a Lincoln Riley offense demands attention. The opportunity may have been created by injuries, but Mosley showed enough to keep earning targets when USC returns to full strength.
