Spring Camp Stock Watch: 10 Key Storylines You Need to Know This Week
Kevin dives into this week's camp reports and spring game updates.
Spring football is in full swing, and with it comes a wave of takeaways from spring games, practice reports, and key developments from around the country. As rosters begin to take shape and position battles heat up, we’re breaking down the top 10 storylines you need to know heading into the summer. From rising stars flashing in scrimmages to major transfer portal moves that could shift the college football landscape, there’s no shortage of news to dive into.
Quick note: I’ve already dropped my full breakdown on Nico Iamaleava’s spring performance—you can find those takeaways below. Let’s jump into the rest of this week’s biggest updates.
The Fallout in Knoxville: Nico Iamaleava Enters the Transfer Portal
In a stunning turn of events, former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava has officially entered the transfer portal, sending shockwaves through the college football landscape. Once seen as the future of Josh Heupel’s up-tempo offense, Iamaleava’s abrupt departure comes amid a contract standoff tied to his NIL deal—one that ultimately led to a no-show at practice and forced the Vols to move forward without their projected starter.
1. Trinidad Chambliss Enters the Portal — FBS Offers Already Rolling In
One of the most intriguing transfer names this week doesn’t come from the FBS ranks—Ferris State QB Trinidad Chambliss has officially entered the portal and wasted no time generating interest. The former D2 standout put together a monster season in his first year as a starter: 2,925 passing yards, 26 touchdowns to just six picks, while completing over 61% of his throws. But what really jumps out is the rushing upside—he added 1,019 yards and 25 scores on the ground. That’s legitimate dual-threat production, and it earned him GLIAC Player of the Year honors and a top-3 finish in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting (D2’s Heisman equivalent).
At 6’1”, 200 lbs, Chambliss has two years of eligibility remaining and has already racked up FBS offers from Temple, Western Kentucky, and Marshall. According to reports, he has visits scheduled with all three. Beyond those, he's also hearing from a host of other programs—including Ohio State, Duke, Minnesota, Washington State, and Utah.
From a C2C and CFF perspective, Chambliss is a name worth tracking closely. The skillset translates, and his eligibility window makes him a potential late-emerging asset. Depending on landing spot, he could easily carve out relevance this fall.
2. Jack Endries Enters the Portal — One of the Top TEs on the Move
This one’s going to shake up a few rankings. Cal TE Jack Endries is officially in the portal with two years of eligibility remaining, and he immediately becomes one of the premier tight ends available. After starting his career as a walk-on, Endries turned into Cal’s most consistent receiving weapon, logging 1,030 yards and four touchdowns over the past two seasons. His 2024 campaign alone included 56 receptions for 623 yards and two scores—leading the team in both categories.
PFF ranked him as the No. 2 returning tight end in the country heading into 2025, and for good reason. He dropped just one pass last season and hauled in nine of 12 contested targets. His production against Power Four competition has been steady, and he was a matchup nightmare in key games, including back-to-back 100-yard outings against Pitt and NC State in 2023.
The surprising part? Despite the strong numbers, Endries only received All-ACC honorable mention honors in 2024. That won’t matter to programs looking for a plug-and-play TE1—and from a devy, C2C, or CFF angle, this is a massive move. Endries was shaping up to be Cal’s de facto WR1, so this not only impacts his outlook but leaves a massive void in the Golden Bears’ offense. His landing spot could seriously shift his fantasy ceiling.
3. Ohio State Spring Game Takeaways
There’s a lot to break down here, but we have to start with Mylan Graham. The five-star wideout has been generating buzz all offseason, and he backed it up on Saturday. Graham had four catches for 104 yards, including a filthy 51-yard touchdown where he housed a slant and made the safety look silly in the open field. I’ve written about him this off-season, and while the room is crowded, I believe there is smoke with how much positive buzz we have been hearing about him. The coaching staff has been raving about his growth, and it’s clear he’s already making his mark.
At quarterback, the battle is still open, but Julian Sayin might have taken a slight edge heading into summer. He led three straight touchdown drives to start the day, dropped a beautiful ball over the middle to Max Klare, and looked confident in the pocket. No picks, solid timing, and that quick release we’ve all seen flashes of, he’s starting to process at game speed now.
Lincoln Kienholz had some solid moments this spring too, especially in the scrimmage and practice leading into the game, but Sayin definitely had the better day on Saturday. The gap isn’t huge, though, which means this thing is far from over. It’s going to come down to who takes control in fall camp.
Now let’s talk about the backfield. James Peoples and C.J. Donaldson were solid, but Bo Jackson stole the show. I’ve been on Bo all offseason—he’s my Devy RB1 in this class—and it’s easy to see why. The kid went off for 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground, plus another score through the air. Coming off an injury-riddled senior year, this spring was huge for him, and he delivered. He brings the burst, the power, and the vision, and if he stays healthy, he’s going to carve out a real role this season.
