The CFB Pulse exists to cut through the daily college football noise and surface the updates that actually matter for your C2C, CFF, and Devy leagues. We scour the college football landscape every week, coaching notes, depth-chart movement, portal ripples, injuries, whispers from inside programs, and distill it into actionable takeaways that help you stay ahead of your league mates before value fully catches up.

Now that we’ve turned the calendar to March, the news cycle begins to shift. It’s quieter on the surface, but this is where edges are quietly created. As winter conditioning rolls into spring camps, roles start to crystallize, usage clues emerge, and early momentum builds for players who will matter later this fall and beyond. The CFB Pulse is designed to catch those signals early, so by the time the rest of the market reacts, you’re already positioned.

Texas Opens Spring Ball: Early Buzz From the Longhorns’ First Practices

Texas opened spring practice this week, and some of the early reports already point to a few young players making noise. With a couple of veterans either limited or still recovering from offseason procedures, several younger players have been getting extended reps early in camp, and a few of them have reportedly taken advantage of the opportunity.

Freshman Kaliq Lockett was one of the early names generating buzz. In the first practice, Lockett reportedly worked as one of the outside receivers with the first group alongside Cam Coleman, largely because Ryan Wingo is still working back from offseason wrist surgery. According to practice reports, Lockett looked comfortable right away, consistently getting open and catching everything thrown his direction. For a freshman in his first college spring, that’s a strong early sign.

Coleman, meanwhile, apparently looked exactly like the player Texas expected when they brought him in. The reports consistently described him as smooth and polished, particularly with his footwork and route running. He was clean in and out of his breaks and reliable when the ball came his way. It’s easy to see why there has been so much buzz around him since he arrived on campus.

Freshman Jermaine Bishop had an up-and-down start, but the flashes were noticeable. One report mentioned a drop during individual route work, but what stood out more was his speed. Later in the week, Bishop reportedly made one of the best plays of the early practices. During individual passing drills he ran a deep post where the throw looked overthrown, but Bishop accelerated, tracked the ball down, and made a catch in stride that drew reactions from teammates watching the drill.

With Emmett Mosley still recovering from offseason surgery, Daylan McCutcheon reportedly worked as the first-team slot receiver and had a productive day inside. Those additional reps could be important this spring as Texas continues evaluating how the receiver rotation will look heading into the season.

Another player drawing attention in early practice reports was freshman running back Derrek Cooper. Observers noted that his physical build immediately stands out in person. Cooper reportedly looks every bit of 6-foot-1 and around 210 pounds, possibly even a little bigger already. The size combined with his movement ability makes him an interesting player to monitor as the spring continues, especially if Texas looks to involve him in the backfield rotation.

It’s still the very beginning of spring practice, but the early practice reports suggest several freshmen are already starting to show flashes. As Texas works through the install and continues evaluating personnel, it looks like a few young playmakers could push their way into the conversation sooner rather than later.
